If you just became single, it can be scary trying to navigate the waters of dating again. It might feel like so much has changed since the last time you were looking to mingle. With the popularity of online dating, it’s like there’s a whole new set of rules now. What you may not know about online dating, though, is the dangers that can come with it. You don’t know if the person on the other side of the screen has crime reports or not. That’s why you should find out as much information about them as possible and be aware of the risks of online dating.
There are some nasty people out there who want to play with other people’s emotions so they can steal their money. These scammers will create a fake persona and, after earning your trust and love, they’ll start asking you for money. This will usually be for an emergency, medical crisis, or some other fake story that they’ve created. If their life story and circumstances seem a little too farfetched, it’s probably because they are.
Even if a person is telling the truth about their identity, they could still be keeping some crucial secrets from you. When you meet someone online, you often don’t have any mutual friends that can vouch for that person’s character. That’s why it’s so important to look up their crime reports. Before you get too involved, find out if your potential romantic partner has been convicted of any crimes. You may be shocked by what you learn about them.
Sociopaths, Narcissists, and Liars
Unfortunately, dating websites tend to attract sociopaths and other manipulators. These people will turn up the charm, usually by using a technique called love bombing, so they can convince their partner to bend to their whims. In addition, there’s the possibility that someone you’re talking to could still be married. Besides just looking up their crime reports, you should also do some research on their marital status to find out if they’re telling the truth.
How You Can Stay Safe on Dating Websites
The most important thing you can do is to refrain from sharing personal information. When you’re getting to know someone and you sense a connection, it can be hard to hold back. But if the relationship moves too fast, you might miss some important warning signs and red flags. If you agree to meet any of your dates in person, make sure to do it in a public place for your own protection. And don’t forget to trust your gut instinct. If you’re getting a bad feeling about somebody, you’re probably right.
